THE UNION STEAM COMPANY.

■We mentioned a short time ago some contemplated additions to the steam fleet trading on this coast, and also the rumored intention of the two principal New Zealand steamship companies to amalgamate. We are in a position now to state, on. good authority, that unites some wholly unexpected change in the situation should take place there is no probability of W* contemplated becoming an accomplished fact, Tho Union S„S.-Co. have made onangemonts for a fleet sufficiently large to meet ah their requirements, and have telegraphed Homo umtructiona to finish and despatch the new steamers aa eariy as possible, giving further directions that the power of each boat shall be increased, so far m practicable, .The result is that five sew

steamers, varying in size and style, but all of tbe most improved modem construction will come out within the next four months. The Wanaka, a similar boat to the ill-fated Bruce, but larger aud more powerful, will arrive early in April, and will be. placed at once in the coastal trade with the Hawea and Taupo, to relieve those vessels of 'the severe strain imposed on them : at pres-mt. The Wanaka will be followed in May by tbe Rotorua, a sister ship to the Hawea and Taupo, but with even more powerful engines. The Rotorua will take up the running on the coast, and the Wanaka then will go on the Bruce’s lino from Dunedin to Timaru, Akaroa, and Lyttelton. Towards the end of May are expected out other three boats; the Eotomabana.’ a very powerful screw steamer, guaranteed to steam 14 mots, for the Dunedin and Oamaru 1 trade; the second, al2 knot tug-boat for the Otago Harbour service; and the third, a large ocean steamship for the Sydney trade, guaranteed to steam 13 knots, and. fitted up in magnificent style, with saloon and sleeping berths amidships. All these steamers are expected to be actually running on their respective lines in June next, —‘ Post.’

M'MECKAN’S LINE,

The new line of steamers between New Zealand and Sydney, arranged by Messrs M'Meckan and Blackwood, has been inaugurated by the s.s. Otago. The subsequent system will be as follows: —The Otago will return to New Zealand from Sydney via Hokitika, and proceed round the coast via the Bluff to Melbourne, leaving the latter port again in March for New Zealand and Sydney. The Albion, which is now receiving a thorough overhaul in Melbourne, will come down in February, and make the same round to and from Sydney as tbe Otago. Tims the service will be regularly maintained by these two fine boats, one leaviug each way every four weeks, and performing an alternate service to Melbourne. The next Melbourne steamer will be tlm Alhambra, which was advertised to leave Melbourne on tbe 26th, and therefore should arrive on the coast to-night or to-morrow. She comes via Hokitika, and will be followed on the 27tb by the Omeo, by way of the Bluff. The subsequent boats will be the inward aud outward Suez mail steamers, the Bingarooma and Arawata.—lbid;
