THE ATHENÆUM.
The committee’s meeting last night was attended by the Re v. R, L. Stanford (in the chair), Professor Macgregor; Messrs Logan, Blair, Caldwell, Lubecki, F sh, Hay, and Dick. Mr F. R Chapman subsequently took his seat a* a committee man in the room of the Rev. Brown applied, on; behalf of the Society of Artists, only recently -established, to get a room in which to hold their meetings at a nominal payment, and not to be charged 10s 6d a as at present. It was resolved that the charge in future should he half-a-crown, provided the members belonged to the Institute. j Mr W. Davidson wrote suggesting that a branch institution should be e tab Lb d at No th funeuin, in the vicinity of Albany street, to take the shape of a tea ling-room, wher-Mnagazii.es and newspapers might be had by those living there* v He also pro osed to have free lectin e* in connection With t. e Athenaeum even if it wa-< necesary to pay occasionally f r professional talent. Such lectures would tend great! «• to benefit the A henee im, by raak'ng it popular and increav i- g its membership. The idea of a branch institution was regarded as somewhat premature. It was reparked by Mr Lubecki that the gas account was a heavy burden on the instituti >n, and ;;n effort, might be made to have it reduced In many places he knew of, the Borough. Councils grnted a reduction'to Leal institutions of his kind, and he w uld move—“ That the Secretary be requested to draw, up a memorial to t.O Mayor and City Cimno Hois, humbly praying that they may be graciously please- 1 to supply the A henaeuno with gas free of charge, and that the ratepayers and members i f the Athei »um be to sign the memorial.”—The proposition, which was opposed by Professor Macobegob, who did not S2e why pup io I odies should be bullied, and by M i'iSH, who thought the Atbeneum Committee woud bn y bnv.- A Tair claim for relief when its reading room was thrown open to the public, was carried. .
The sum of L 26 was donated to Mr Parsons, the Institute's agent in London; and L 5 was voted to the assistant librarian, Mr Worthington. •* Means Blair and Fish were appointed a building committee; Messrs Macgregor. Stanford,. and ‘Chapman a committee to examine the suggestion book; and Mr A. I<ivi&nton elected audito".
