The directors’ report states that since the organiof the present Company many difficulties have been encountered, but the strong confidence of the shareholders and frugal management have overcome them,' the works being now all but complete. The water is effectively drained to the level of the tail-race, and the pumps will soon be at work. The Arrow United Co., adjoining, is about to start pumping, and the combined strength of the two companies will give such a chance of success as was never before obtained. Th 6 magnitudepf the Company’s works is highly creditable to any merely local company. Nothing seems wanting but continuous good .weather to open the richest mine in the Wakatip. - The adjourned nrm nal meeting of this society was held in the lower room of the Athenaeum last night. Mr John Reith presiding. We make the following extract £apm the directors’ report:—The profits available for division ainofmt t0L19512s lOd, and of this sum it is proposed to divide a bonus of 10 per cent., on the accounts of the subscribing members; which will absorb LI 86 lj>s, and to carry the balance forward to next year’s account. The loans are covered by 18 mortages of various amounts on freehold properties, all of which are good for much more than the advances made on them. L2OOO have been thus lent out during the currency of the year, and.thepresent value of the securities is L 3,750 Is 4d, The progress of the Society during the year has been satisfactory, and, being now fairly established, the prospects for the future are. still more so.” Messrs Palmer, Joyce, Hindle, t and De Beer were re-elected directors; and Mr T. Black shareholders’ auditor.. The directors were given power to arrange to issue short-period shares’ a djiaid-up shares during the year; and the meetmg approved of amalgamation with the National Building Society on the basis reported. A vote of thanks was awarded to Mr W. Brown (the secretaiy) for his labors for the Society’s advancement.

THE LABOR MARKET.
Mr Skene reports that there is a large demand for laborers now, principally for harvesting, for which everything else will be partially neglected. Skilled farm hands are very short. Town work is quiet. Bakers, carpenters, masons, blacksmiths, and couples move slowly. Female servants of ex* perience hardly to be got. Shopmen and’ clerks a shade more active. Wages : Couples, from L7O to LOO; ploughmen'and shepherds, L6O to L7O; reapers, 20s to 30s per acre; harvest wages vary from 25s to 60s per week; day labor, 8s and 9s; grooms, cooks, Waiters, billiard markers, <fec., 25s to 60s per week; honse girls, 10s to 15s per week; hotel and upper servants, ISsto 30s per week; carpenters, 12sto 13s per day; milkers andodd hands, 16a.t0 25a; storehands, 25s to SOsper week; gar* deners quiet’; and buslunen, 9s to Us per day.
