BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.

Chbistciioboh, January 25. The recent appointment of Mr Frederick De Carteret Malet, late Clerk to the Resident Magistrate's Court here, to the Registrarship of the Supreme Court, rendered vacant by Mr E. S. Willcocks being transferred to Auckland, has given g<eat dissatisfaction. The Canterbury l aw Society have decided to protest strongly against it to the Minister of Justice, on the ground that Mallet is not fitted for the appointment, as he is neither a member of the legal profession nor has had any experience in Supreme Court p act ice. Although not stated in the resolutions passed, the members of the Law Society are greatly dissatisfied at the p eserit Deputy-Registrar, who has been fourteen years in the service, being passed over for a non-professional man. There is also a strong feeling among the general public to the same effect. The Wellington Artillery have beaten the Christchurch Artillery in the rifle match, 12 men a-side, by 101 points. Several attempts have recently been made to upset trains. Yesterday a quantity of spades and other tools were found lying on the rails of the Ellesmere line. Bluff, January 26.
