Five minute s after the start the position was ; —Stella, 1; Dolly Varden, 2 ; Kaiapoi, 3 ; ‘ haraes, 4. Dolly soon after got the lead, and the Thames began to creep up. The Holly Varden kept the lead. Kaiapoi pulled beautifully, and appeared to be gaining fast on the others, i he same positions were maintained till near the winning post, when the ;-tella gradually crept up, till it was thought she was going to take the money. here was a beautiful race between the Thames and Kaiapoi. Dolly was never passed. Thames came in third, and the Kaiapoi last, ihe time was L9min. Klsec. !he race was a -very close one between the two Wellington boats. The Colonist started off with, the lead, but was quickly overhauled by the Thistle and Tito Ivowaru soon afterwards. The Colonist and Tito Kowaru were almost side by side, with the others well up. Orion, to the disgust of her admirers, was all behind for the first five minutes. At this time the positions were—Tito Kowaru, 1; Colonist, 2; Thistle, 3; Cure, 4; Orion, 5. For the next half-mile there was a splendid race between the two first-named bouts. On coming to the turn it was extremely doubtful which Was leading, but before long it was clear that the Colonist had the best chance. At this juncture the umpire's boat crossed the bows of the racing boats—the Thistle then gave in, and I the boats passed the winning post in the above- > named order, the Colonist being two lengths ahead. They were the only crew that had a chance with the Transit, which was rowed by the Dolly Varden’s crew. (‘onsideriug the “slightness of the men, and their boat being five feet shorter than the Transit, they did woudei e. !• or about two miles they kept nose to nose with the winning boat, and pulling exactly the same stroke, and very much in the same style. The time of stroke varied between forty and forty-four per minute from start to finish. Altogether the Dunedin crew were
