Messrs Geoi-ge Murray, W. L. Lcgall; Jas. Donaldson, A. M'Kerrow, Jas. Findlay, W. Murcott, and Joseph Reid, have been appointed a Harbor Board for Mocraki. This morning a deputation from the South Dunedin Municipality, consisting of Messrs Maloney (Mayor), Boirowman, and Newman, waited fipoh the Superintendent with reference to what had appeared in one of the papers regarding the application of the St, Hilda Municipality to lease the Sandhills. The deputation urged that the hills formed the only place of recrcatiou in the neighborhood, and they hoped to have a share in them. They thought the St. Hilda Municipality were asking to obtain them as a source of revenue. His Honor replied that he had not yet had time to look into the matter, but no grant could be made without an Act of the Legislature. He thought the St. Hilda people wanted the hills merely to prevent themselves from being flooded, and did not suppose that any one else ever applied for them or would give 20s an acre for them. He would not like to see any jealousy between the two Municipalities at presentin existence. Mr Moloney asked, if new Municipalities were subsidised at the rate of L2 to LI, as there was a large revenue coming in from the flat. His Honor said there was an Act providing that new Municipalities should get LSOO, but it did not state where the money was to come from. He would look into the matter the deputation had brought before him, but would in the meantime urge the two Municipalities to work together and help each other. The Chief Inspector of Sheep’s annual report has been published, and from it we learn that on September 30 there were 3,852,395 sheep in the Province, being an increase of 477,963 since September, 1873, which has to be reverted to for comparison, as owing to the absence of Mr Logie there was no report last year. 2,360,810 are depastured on runs, 1,350,268 on freehold, 23,900 on hundreds, and 117,050 on goldfields runs. Since 1873 a decrease of 171,940 has taken place on runs, while freehold for the same period shows an increase of 580,760, goldfields runs an increase of 72,567, and hundreds a decrease of 3,388. By sea 800 stud sheep were introduced, and 46,567 have been sent across from Canterbury. Mr Bayley says in conclusion -“ The decrease on runs can be accounted for from the fact that a quantity of country then included in runs has since become freehold; that for the last two years all unimproved lands have been stocked up to their full carrying capacity (in some cases overstocked), and that the quantity of land laid down under grass is annually increasing. To cultivation and artificial feeding we must look for our future increase in numbers as well as the greater portion of our fat stock. lam happy to be in a position to report all sheep in the Province free from disease, nothing of the kind having existed for more than two years, and that a,n average return of lambs, together with fair clip, arc anticipated for this season.”
