(Motion) 0 Mr W, S Cox’s borbr c Sir Knight, 2yrs, by Fop—Dred, feather 0 Betting—2 to 1 and sto 2 agst Eobin Hood, 3 and 4 to 1 each agst Richmond and Maid of All Work. 6 and 7 to 1 each agst Melbourne and Goldsborough,lo to 1 avst Burgundy, 15 to 1 agst Bella, 20 to 1 each agst Proto-Martyr, The Painter, and Calumny. When the flag fell, the colors of Melbourne, Calumny, and Richmond shewed most prominently for a few strides, and Bella lost a length or two through hanging at the post, but before they reached the turn Proto-Martyr had a clear advantage, and led at a tremendous pace as they left the straight. Emulation, Calumny, Melbourne, Eobin H rod, Richmond, Maid of All Work, and Burgundy following, with Goldsborough, Sir Knight, Bella, Dag woxth, and The Painter a few lengths behind the main body. By the river Proto-Martyr slightly increased his lead, Bella improved her position, and Goldsborough and The Painter dropped back last, the latter thus early being beaten, and Sir Knight and Dagworth also were done with before another half-mile had been traversed. All along the bend by the abbattoirs and passt the sheds the English horse continued to cut out the work at a strong pace, and he led into the straight, closely attended by Emulation, Eobin Hood, Calumny, and Burgundy, the last-named losing several lengths in consequence of making a wide detour at the turn. Passing the stand, the English horse was still at the head of affairs, but Emulation had dropped back fifth, Robin Hood, Burgundy, Richmond, Melbourne, Maid of All Work, Calumny, and Bella keeping close order with him, and Goldsborough at their heels, Sir Knight, The Painter, and Dagworth toiling hopelessly in the rear. Proto-Martyr took them along at a merry pace as they rounded the turn by the river side, the black jackets of De Mestre following rlo e in his wake, and Bella making her way towards the leaders without any perceptible effort, while Emulation dropped back beaten, and Dagworth, who broke down badly in the near foreleg, slipped on to his side, and Davis jumped off. Meanwhile Bella and Mr De Mestre’s two joined Proto-Martyr, with whom they raced for a few strides, and the pace having told its tale upon the Englishman, he retired iu favor of Bella, the Tasmanian bringing them along at a great pace to the sheds, Robin Hood, Maid of All w o rk, Burgundy, Richmond, Melbourne, and Calumny all holding excellent positions in close attendance, and approaching the turn the white face of the New Zealand mare showed very promi nently; Goldsborough also looking dangerous as they rounded the final turn. At this point Eobin Hood and Bin gundy were beaten, and Maid of All Work had just previously deprived Beda of the lead. Amid great excitement the Maid led into the straight, closely followed by Richmond, Bella, Robin Hood, Calumny, Melbourne, and Burgundy, Goldsborough on the outside coming up in grand style, and joining Richmond, the pair raced up to Maid of Ail Work, but the two three-year-olds drew slightly away from the son of Fireworks, and for a few' strides the contest between the young ones seemed to be pretty evenly balanced, but Hales making a vigorous call upon Richmond, he responded gamely, and drawing away from the filly, be won cleverly by between two and three lengths, Ashworth, on Goldsborough, miking a grand rush a few strides from the post, and beating Maid of All Work by a head for second place, Bella close up fourth, and at an interval of five or six length > came Robin Hood, with Melbourne some lengths away sixth, Calumny seventh, followed at intervals by Burgundy, Emulation, and Pro-o Marty ; Sir Knight and Tho Painter, who were beaten off, walking in with the crowd. Time, smin 35secs.
At a recent sale of racing stock by Mr Tuille in Melbourne, Calumny was gold for 500 guineas. The ‘Australasian,’ in describing the sale, says:—“ The celebrated New Zealand racing mare Calumny w..s then led into tin* ring, and her splendid condition and beautiful quality created quite a buzz of admiration. SL .. was started at 300 guineas, and, after reaching 500 gui eas, she was knocked down to Mr Samuel Gardiner. This was considered one of the greatest bargains of the day. It is quite probable that this mare will be raced until the end of the renron, after which she wi'l join her old companion, Lurline. in the Chela worth Stud.
The ‘ Illustrated New Zealand Herald’ this month, with two local views, is the heft number yet issued. The colored supplement is alam) worth the money.
