To a memorial from the Oamaru district for the speedy opening of the main line between Oamaru and Maheno, which is now completed, the Public Works Department make reply that inquiries will be made Math a view to ascertain whether it is possible to comply with the petioners’ request. It is rare indeed that cricket engenders such angry feelings as appear to have been caused among the Wwikouaiti players, through Palmerston declining to postpone a match that was to have been played at Palmerston on the 7th inst. A column of our Palmerston contemporary is occupied this week with the telegraphic correspondence that passed between the two chibs ; but it is neither edifying nor instructive. In one message the Wdiikouaiti secretary tells the Palmerston “ scratch” to take a lit, ” and uses very unparliamentary language in describing the state of the weather.

In support of the rule it is alleged that the arrangements made for recording votes at the election of Mayor were of such a nature that the provisions of the Ordinance with respect to voting by ballot could not possibly be complied with ; and further, that there was a material breach of the Ordinance with regard to the publication of the citizens’ list or roll.
