VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
The monthly inspection of No. 1 City Guards was to nave token place last evening, but in consequence of the small muster the inspecting ofhcer (Lieut. Pell), by request of Captain Wales, postponed the inspection until next Monday evening. The Cadets mustered in good force, there being present one lieutenant, one sub-lieutenant, three sergeants, sixteen rank and file {thirty-seven all told). Their arms and accoutrements ■were inspected and found to ]>o in very fair order, alter w-hich their lieutenant v-as called to the front, to id! off and prove the company, and put them through some company and marching drill, which was done in a most creditable manner. Gunner Jamieson writes to us that the Naval Brigade did not fire yesterday for representatives. “Yesterday morning,” he adds, “was the last on which the company could fire, and members entitled to fire, considering it folly to attempt making a score In the gale of wind that was blowing, wisely remained At home. Two new members of the company went out to the range on the strength of being allowed to practice with those who were entitled to fire for representatives, but finding none of the latter then took advantage of the marker's presence to have a shot over the ranges,” We can only say that we were given to understand that the scores we published were made in the mannerVe represented them to have been.

The 4 Briice Herald : tells us that asjhas been the fortune of the Company for the last two or three years, the weather was gacatly against them. The six district representatives from whom the choice is to be
made, together with their scores in the preliminary contest are :—Hunyard, Hokitika, 91; Chamberlain, Grey mouth, 89; Simmons, Greymouth, 86 ; Twohill, Greymouth, 86 ; Gorrie, Greymouth, 85 ; Stonebridge, Hokitika, 83. The Artillery Company fired for choice of Colonial representatives at Anderson’s Bay this morning, under charge of Capt. Stavely, D.N.8., and Lieut. Pell, N.D. The weather was magnificent; in fact a finer day for shooting could not possibly be wished for. The Artillery Company being now armed with the carbine rifles, this year lire under the same conditions as cavalry men, atid not with the infantry, as hitherto. The conditions provide for two competitions at 200, 250, 300, and 400 yards, seven shots at each, and to qualify for representatives an aggregate of 160 points must be made in the two competitions. The nine highest scorers in the Colony are the Colonial carbine representatives. Notwithstanding the exceptionally fine weather this morning, the scores, with two exceptions, were very indifferent. Subjoined are the scores in ex lenso of those who made seventy and over : 200 250 3 0 400 yds yds. yds. yds. Tl. Smith... 2234242 4313343 2224444 4344334 -90 Lt. Lambert, 69 ; Gunner Peake, 65 ; Gunner Hislop, 63 ; Sergt. Coxhead, 52 ; Gunner Wallace, 39; Gunner Marsden, 35. The second competition takes place on Friday. Considerable opposition is offered by the Artillery to the use of the carbine on the ground that all shooting at ranges over 400 must cease, as the carbines cannot he depended upon after that range. The company therefore is thrown out of all competition against the other town companies, whether for association prizes or company match shooting. The firing in the first stage is now completed. The thirty highest scorers, whoso scores we append, will again fire under the same conditions, and at the same ranges, and the five highest aggregate scorers will represent Otago at Wanganui.
