ELECTORAL NOTES.
There is no truth in the report that Mr Ireland has retired from the contest for Waikaia. Mr Wm, Buckland has retired from the contest for Franklin, after making a strong attack upon Sir George Grey, At the Fianklyn nomination, Messrs May, Goodfellow, Hamlin, Buckland, Woodward, and Lusk were proposed. At the Rodney nomination, Mr Sheehan was proposed by Sir George Grey. Messrs Moat, Shepherd, and Farnall were also proposed. For Waitemata, Messrs J. T. Macfarlane, Thomas Henderson, W. J. Hurst, and Dr Jiee were nominated, [Dr Lee had the show of hands. PORT CHALMERS ELECTION. H The full returns give— Reynolds. Green. Port Chalmers ‘225 109 Purakanui 3 10 Blueskin 13 66 241 185 Majority for Reynolds, 56. As instancing the keenness of the contest, it may be mentioned that the roll numbers 529 electors, of whom forty-eight are either dead or not to be found, so that of the 481 available voters, 427 were brought to the poll, which speaks volumes for the activity of the committees. It is also stated that nearly sixty voters were brought from town, and of these fifty had pledged themselves to vote for Mr Reynolds. QUEENSTOWN ELECTION. The final declaration of the poll was— Manders 261 Bradshaw 200 Cope 34
There was considerable excitement. Mr Bradshaw attributes his defeat to false pub- I cations in the ‘Mail’ and ‘Observer’; to being an absentee and to the education question.— After the declaration, Mr Manders was * lifted into a carnage and drawn by a • mob to Eichardt’s Hotel, where his sup- * porters drunk his health in a bumper. 1 EGMONT ELECTION. The following was the polling ; Atkinson. Ivcss, ‘ Town 77 5 1 Omata 24 0 ■ Oakura 31 16 Hawera 48 22 ; Carlyle 32 27 M ami tab i 13 2 225 73 Majority for Major Atkinson, 152. Groper’s Bush; a portion of the Riverton electorate, cannot be accused of partiality. It gave six votes to each of the three candidates, THE WESTPORT ELECTION. It appears that wo were misinformed on Saturday. The member returned for the Buller is Dr. Henry, a pronounced Abolitionist. The poll took place on January 5, and resulted as follows ; Homy. O'Conor, Westport 175 149 Terraces 55 22 Addison’s 29 52 Charleston. 154 111 Brighton 26 38 Lyell 39 62 Totals 478 434 Christie’s is the only booth’s returns that is not to hand, but it was certain to give Dr Henry a majority. There is little doubt that Mr O’Conor's trifling with the Abolition question has cost him his seat. WAITAKI ELECTION. The two Provincialist candidates have been returned by a large majority. The returns give Steward Slirimsld, O’Meagher. Hislop", Oamavu 109 151 59 187 Pukeuri 16 5 12 8 Hampden 12 57 7 C 5 Herbert 13 39 3 47 Maheno 21 25 15 28 171 275 93 336 Two country returns have yet to come in, but they will not affect the result. In noting the. return of Mr Hislop, it gives us pleasure to state that he will be the first young man educated at our High School who has been elected a member of the Colonial Legislature.
