POET CHALMERS ELECTION.

To the Editor. S]E, Would you pei mit me to give a blank denial to a statement made I>y 41 Independent E.cctor” in yonr issue of the fith hist. eonCi rning _Mr M’lmloe being down at Port Chalmers, I wish to inform him that tiie League knows nothing at all about any ttpiib or handbill being written by Mr M'iudoe either praising or running down either of the candidates for Port Chalme', as they Lave not interfered with the Port Chalmers election .since the day of nomination, nor do they intend to do so.—l am, &c,, t John Babnes, Chairman and Treasurer to the _ j. „ Anti-Central League. Dtmo&ri, January 7.

To the Editor. Sir,—Sometimes persecution drags men into fame, at others honors are thrust on them. To which of these am 1 indebted for the notice of my obscure self in the letter of “ Independepont Elector ” m last night’s Star ? I was not “detected” in the act of sticking up the handbill at Port Chalmers, Detection was not necessary, as I did the act openly in the light of day. iI he circumstances me these. To carry a political object I rejoice in being either “bill sticker ” or “member ” for a district: to both of these .offices a glory is attached of which a man might bo proud. Accordingly I went to the Pert and stuck up two handbills on the windows of Mr Reynolds’s committee-rooms (copy of which I enclose, and ask you to publish it). Immediately thereafter Dr Drysdale came along, stood, and read the documents, which so kindled his ire that he to e them down. Detecting him in the act I sung out to him loud enough to be heard, and at once ran back, lifted the obnoxious documents from the street, and re-stuck them ou the. verandah post. If I have no “ earthly” connection with the P.»rt I do not claim a spiritual. All I can say is that the constituency of that district was once honored by having me put before them as a candidate for the Assembly, and the result was that I polled one vote, so that I can surely claim a singular connection.—l am, &c., . Jas. MTndoe, Dunedin, January 7. P.S. —I am the writer and publisher of the handbill referred to, and an active wo;king member of (he Anti-Centralist League. [We have to acknowledge the receipt of a copy of the handbill.— Ed. * E. S.’]
