VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
THE COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING. The East Taieri Rifles fired for choice of Colonial representatives on their own range yesterday, Sub-Lieut. Eagerty, S.D.R., in command. Only three men competed, but as will be seen from the scores below, the filing throughout was good : 200 400 500 600 Tt. Wilson—who fired at the Waikari range this morning under the superintendence of Lieut. Marshall. The weather was favorable, and it will be seen that the scoring, especially by Captain Goldie, was very good. At 500 yds Lieutenant Wilson made 26 out of a possible 28, and at the next range Captain Goldie, whose total score is the highest yot made in this year’s competition, attained a similar result. 200 400 500 600 „ . « „. yds yda yds y ds T1 Capt. There was over twelve feet of windage at the long ranges, thus accounting for the poor scores. The only competitor to make over SO points was 200 400 500 600 yds yds yds yds T1 Vol. W. G. M'Cartney 9 3223323 4344444 2344434 0242430 -84 We would remind those companies who have not furnished their returns of the firing to the Militia Office, that unless these arc sent in by Friday next those who have taken part in the competition will be disqualified. Strange to say, the returns of the South District Rifles, who were the first to fire, have not yet been sent in. The Waikari Rangers when inspected by Lieut. Pell (Acting-Adjutant of the Dunedin district), turned out twenty rank and file under the command of Lieutenant Marshall. Two-thirds of those present were not in uniform ; and there are ten additional members who have not yet received arms. The Acting-Adjutant found most of the rifles brought to the parade in good order ; but he reports that the company knew nothing of inspection drill, apparently never having been put through it previously.
