Haricot declared overweight, and Freestone 3slbs. This race was watched with considerable interest, as Haricot on the first day, in the Maiden Plate, with 9st 4ib up, against 7st 3lb on Freestone, was declared the winner, and it was thought by mans' out iders that the protest lodged was incorrectly decided, an opinion entertained by Mr Keenan, the owner, aud others, and therefore he decided to let him run, carrying 7st, with 3lb declared overweight, while aricot had the advantage of 131bs less, 2^lbs overweight. As the flag dropped, the grey sprang away at a terrific pace, closely pur* sued by Freestone, 1 while Gamt cock was held well in hand. Haricot held the lead till the mile was passed, and at one time looked a sure winner, but as the rise was reached the Cock came to the front, and a magnificent race ensued. Koanding the straight Freest n« answered- 10' the spur and took up second place, which order was maintained till the winning post was passed. Haricot being a good third. Cocksure bolted. | At the Tapnnui races Tambourini won the Maiden Plate ; Fenian the Publicans’ Purse of 15 sovs, beating Wild Bey, and Tuapeka Lydia the District Handicap ; and Border Lad the Miners’ Purse. On the second day Tambourini won the Hurdle Race, beating Playboy, Fenian, and Postboy; Lydia the Town Plate, of 25 sovs, beating Fenian and Porder Lad ; and Wildboy the Consolation. The protest lodged by Mr H. Falconer, owner of Miss Morris, against Steamer, Faugh-a-ballagh. and Boxer, who ran first, second, and third for the Blneskin Free Handicap on Boxing Day, was considered by the stewards on Friday evening and disallowed, and the three horses in question are therefore placed as above.
