HARBOR BOARD.

At the adjourned meeting of the Board today there were present the Superinteudent (in the ch dr). Messrs Tnrabul;, M’Kinnon, Davie, Tewsley, M‘Neil, and Beeves. It’ was decided to call for tenders for wharf extension in terms of a previous resolution, permitting alter ative tend' rs for so many feet of concrete walls, the tenderers for the latter work to provide their own plans and specifications ;to bo advertised for six weeks. There was some discussion as to the advisability of calling for tenders for the concrete, the opinion of Mr M'Neil and others being that the calling for tenders involved a certain amount of responsibility on the part of the Board. Mr Tewsley had been giv. n to undeistand that persons who were willing to tender were satisfied that they could build the walls in concrete and keep them in repair for three years as required, for the amount the Engineer estimated wooden wharves would cost. It was stated that the resolution involved the Board in no responsibility. The following tenders were accepted : —For removing training wall, Mason and Ann r, L 190; for building five punts, Murray and Co., LS9G —On the question of leading lights, Mi M’Nexl asked if the Board were perfectly satisfied that they would be such an unmistakeablo benefit to the port as to warrant the expenditure,- Mr M'KINNON explained that they were small lighthouses, with all the paraphernalia of big lighthouses, and they would enable vessels to be brought in or taken out at any hour of the night It was decided to post pone further discussion, to enable the Harbor Master to submit a report showing the cost of lighting and maintaining the lights. It was resolved to send for Major Gordon, to advise the Board upon the Engineer's scheme, and to request the Victorian Government to hasten that gentleman’s visit as much as possible. Mr Turnbull gave notice of motion for next meeting to the effect that if there was no quorum present within ten minutes’ after the hour of meeting it should stand adjourned. 'there was only one tender for repairing the steam crane, Kincaid and M'Queen, L7O 13s.
