ELECTORAL NOTES.
It may be well to draw the attention of resi dents in Dunedin to the fact that the Roll of I Electors which has just been c mpleted, in- £ eludes, or ought to include, all qualified persons who had paid thoir Municipal rates before j 31st August last, irrespective of whether they j have taken the trouble or had the opportunity } to apply for registration in the usual way at ’ the beginning of this year. Thus a great num- , bar of persons are on the new roll who had no idea that they were registered as electors. e We hear that a block vote of “ plumpers for ( Macassey ” will be given to that gentleman by < the Roman Catholic electors, in consequence of j his view on the education question. Messrs Pearce and Hunter addressed the ] Wellington electors last night. They both i strongly opposed Separation, and will support ■ secular education. They said they did not 1 attempt to get a third member for Wellington as it would have been useless, but they had -r assisted in getting four additioual members ( for the North Island. A vote of thanks to each t was passed unanimously. * The Abolitionist portion o! the electors of J the Selwyn district, after much trouble, have , succeeded in obtaining a candidate in the per- i son of Mr Fitzroy, a runholder, to oppose Mr e Reeves ; but the return of the latter is con- i sidered certain. | Our Queenstown correspondent telegraphs that ‘ six candidates are likely to be nomi- j nated for the Lakes. Mr Macassey stands E upon the squatter and education ticket; Mr a Cope announces himself as a warm Aboli- ® tionist; and it is likely that Mr Bradshaw c will be nominated. Eight hundred votes can be j polled.” b Mr M'Gillivray has definitely announced i that he will seek re-election for Riverton. _ t Last night Mr Fish addressed a large meeting at the Headquarters Drill-shed, the Mayor •* occupying the chair. At the conclusion of his ( address, Mr Spears moved and Mr Sherwin E seconded a vote of confidence, which was met I by a directly contrary vote proposed by Mr Martin (a carter), who found a seconder with diffioii ty, and only had half a dozen supporters. The original proposition was carried by acclamation. ( The ‘ Bruce Herald ’ says it is not at all im- ] probable that Mr W. A. Murray will have a t walk-over for the representation of Bruce. A 1 requisition was presented to Mr R. Charters, of < East Taieri, yesterday, asking him to come * forward for the representation of Bruce, but he ' declined. t Mr Mervyn has addressed two meetings in t the Waikaia district. He declares himself an 5 out-and-out Abolitionist, and in favor of 5 secular, compulsory, and free education; but ‘ would assist denominations, when called upon, j in the same manner as in Nelson. At Roxburgh , the following resolution was carried : —“ That i this meeting has full confidence in Mr Mervyn, t and bis ability to represent the Waikaia district in the General Assembly j” and at - Etrick, in addition to a vote of confidence, the opinion of the meeting was expressed that, as a local candidate, he was more likely to ad- ' vance the interests of the district than any other candidate in the field, < The following table shows the dates for tho i elections as far as we have l|pen able to ascer- i tain : ; Nomination. • Poll.
