To the SHtor. Slß,—There seeuia to b - a disposition on tho part of the Rowing Club to define an "ama teur " as " one who dops not gain his livelihood by manual labor." Were such definition accepted, farmers, owners of runa, cattle stations, etc., would bo ineligible to row a"* amateurs. Now, in England, " one who has neyer com . pete.l for public money "is the wa v the term is understood'; and by "public money' is meant not only money actually subscribed bv the people, but any prize given by corporate bodies, such as railway or insurance companies, licensed victuallers, etc. Such a definition'would, I think, .ho far better than the 4 manual labor "one.—l am, etc., t, ~ , Englishmav.
