would convey : ut a faint idea of what was really the case, ard only the men on the range can form a really good fidea of the disadvanto be contended with. The wind was pitnin-ly cold—wintry blasts dying occasionally into light puffs—and at intervals rain would fall. This a*, counts for the poor scores At the longer ranges the wind shifted every j few minutes, and it was almost impossible to : get two consecutive shots “on.’ J Ail those | who assumed a leading position in the aggre- j gate list at the close cl last night’s firing fell off to-dny, and now rank nowhere. Vol, Frederick, for instance, who headed the list, made four misses out of his five shots at ! 600 yards; and Lieut. Wilson, who had fired 1 go* well all through the previous day, only hit ' th e target twice at the same range, Vol. Kohn, i wlho promised to be one of the ten highest in ! the aggregate, also completely ‘’burst up,” his ! last six shots being all misses, while Corporal i Richardson, North Dunedin’s pride, and a Colonial representative nearly half a-dozen times I never hit the target at 500 yards. In all fiftysix competed in this natch. At the 400 yards rang © Corpl. Brown, No. 1, and Capt. Goldie, , P.C. .M.K , each made 19, out of a possible 20 ; ! at th e 500 yards the country corps came to the 1 front, Vol, Smail. of Ciutha, and Vol. j M'batchie, Bruae, each making 18; and at i 600 yards Lieut. Pell, of North Dunedin, was , the on ly one to make a respectable score, he I contributing 17. '

liriH Match.—soo and 600 yards; seven ffliotß at each. First prize, silver-plated cup. presented by Messrs P. Hayman and Co. ; second, vases and ornament, presented by Messrs De Baer and Co.; third, albeit memorial, presented by Mr R. Glendining; fourth, fifth, sixth prizes, trophies. To allow the country members to return home this sitemoon, it was agreed that they should fire in this match before the competitors from town. The principal scores were made by Black) e, Clutha, with 23 at 500 yards, and 19 at 600 ; Yol. M'Cartney, Porto, 24 and 17 • Sergt. M'Cartney, do, 20 and 20 ; M'Clalchie’ Bruce, 26 and 14. The town members are now (3.30 p.m.) firing, Blackie has tbu < fired in the five matches to decide the aggregate prize-takers, and made the very tine total of 235 in seventy-three shots, or an average considerably above that of centres. It is ve< y doubtful whether his total will he reached by any one yet to fire. The ten highest aggregate scores made at the first five matches of the meeting will be posted at the Empire Hotel this evening. The firing for Mr Hay don’s trophy by the same ten scorers will commence at 5 a.m. on Monday, and the small-bore match at 2 p.m. on that day.
