THE REGATTA.

To the Editor. Sib,—lt would save a great amount of trouble, jvnd perhaps some unpleasantness, if the Mann ging Committee would state publicly their defii dtion of the term “ amateur.” Without seeing; a copy, “ A Committee Man ” has ventured to inform ns that the Sydney rules define “ amateur ” as “ anyone not earning his living by manual labor.” .Surely this cannot be accepts'(l as correct. If so, only those who are fortunate enough to be’able to exist on their “ wits” can be entitled to rank as “amateurs,” Wpuld it not be as well for the committee to point out. i boat as a sample of the heavy fouroared boat l3 which are to be allowed ? I would also ask if outriggers are to be permitted in the Scullers’ Race ?—I am, etc., Platypus. Dunedin, December 7. To the. Editor. Sir,—-I was' much amused by reading in your issue of list night’s Star “Committee Marks’’ reply to “Fair Play.” In the first plafje, I was struck by the utter absurdity of the .Regatta Committee, adopting rules for the re f ;ulation of the regatta, which rules most of the committee have newsr seen, and which, a« cording to “ Committee Alan’s ” account, can trot be procured in Dunedin, And secondly, by „ ‘ Committee Man ” supposing for a single Snstant that the “gist of it” would satisfy t hose parties who are debarred by the fc Sydney rules from j. Tilling in the reg.atta. How the committee are going to settle an* disputes which may. nay, will take plane under the present rules, wit hout a copy of the same, lamat a loss to imagine. There is surely enough of the “legal element” in the comnu ttee to see that such an important thing, - as th« ) regatta rules are properly drawn up. X trust the committee* will see the advisa - - bi.Hity of reconsidering their decision with re gard to the rules, and that they will adopt ot hers less stringent and therefore better calcula ted to encourage rowing ; otherwise the proposed regatta will bo a decided failure, as the oi&ly crews which the iSyduey rules do not e Kclude are those of the Otago Rowing Club, '■’ho come under the definition (save the mark!) •of “gentlemen amateurs.” —I am, &c., .. , Justice. Dunedin, December 9.
