CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held yesterday ; present—the Mayor and all the Councillors, except Cr. Leary. Tho motion of Cr. Beeves that tenders should be called for forming, kerbing, and channelling the following streets St. Andrew street (from Cumberland to Leith street), the whole of Castle street, Clarendon street, Grange street, Leith street, Clyde street (west side), Athel place, low portion of Forth street, Union street (from George street to river), 11. David street to river, Cumberland street (from Frederick street to river, Duudas str.et (south side), Howe street (south side)- -was agreed to. Tenders are also to be called for metalling Castle street, from Howe street to Brook street. The following reports'were brought up:— The Finance Committee reported ; (1.) That instructions had been given to prepare thirty years’ Corporation gas debentures for the purchase of the gasworks, aud that Mr Hankey’s attorney had been requested to forward a schedule of extras of loose stock at gasworks. (2.) In view of the fact that tho Council will shortly assume charge and conduct of the gasworks, that applicatious bo invited for the following appointments, viz.—Gas engineer aud manager, clerk and accountant, collector, aud office youth, salaries to be fixed by the Council. (3.) That the Council does not now require to repurchase the L 3.300 Corporation bonds held by the General! Government.

The Water Supply.Committeo reported':— That Messrs North and Scoullar had been informed that it was necessary to give them notice of intention to discontinue water supply to "their engine, but it is hoped yet to be able to give them a continuance of the supply. In accordance with a late resolution, the Waterworks Engineer has classified the various lifts in operation iu the City, in accordance with which the Town Clerk will in future charge. That it has been decided to insure in the National office the waterworks plant in store in Stuart street, especially the lately-arrived plant, tor a sum approximate to its value. In future Mr R. K. Murray to be c-iargod 25s instead of 10s a week for his special supply.

The Kessrves Committee reported : That tho application of the Waikari School Board for a new lease of section at Waikari, at present occupied by the Schoolhouse, be declined ; that the present lease be allowed to expire by effusion of time, and the section submitted to auction in the usual way. That a printed notice he prepared for service upon the various persons whese properties are found to encroach upon the Town Belt, aud that immediate effect be given to this recommendation. Permission has been granted to the N. E. Valley Road Board to form a road from the district road, bounding Opoho to the Signal Hill load through the Town Belt; also, to connect No, I street with the same road at a point ten chains from Captain Boyd's old gates—the work to be done under the Council's Surveyor’s direction, and.the permission to be revocable at any time.

The Sanitary Committee reported : That Mr D. Andrews, jun., had been writtenfto inquiring upon what 1 erms lie would receive the City refuse upon his property near tho Chain Hills; and peudiug his reply, they were unable to .make any recommendation.

The® Woik-< Committesvreported inter alia, That permission had been refused to Mr Brnithwaito to slops the embankment on his ground on to the Town Belt. That permission was given to Thomas Condon to lay down a trial sample of a new footpath composition, at Princes street, at his own cost, under the. Surveyor b direction. That permission was granted to Guthrie and Daruach to add another storey to a portion of their premises in Princes street south, but their request to construct the front of wood pending the widening of Princes street south was declined. That tenders had been called for abating the nuisance on Mr It. S. Dod’s property section 20, block 2C>, his agent hav.ng undertaken to pay for tho work if the tender was approved by hiu prior to acceptance.
