LATEST FIJI NEWS.

(Per Lewellyn, at Auckland.) Great uneasiness is manifested and expressed in reference to the delay which has taken place in effecting the Government indebtedness, and a rumor is in circulation that the Commission so tardily appointed to investigate claims against the Government had to be sent to England for approval before payment could be made. The rumor is generally considered true. If it is, it will go far to destioy tbo confidence of the people in his Excellency. Business is exceedingly dull. Everyone is waiting for the settlement of land and money claims against the kte Government. 'I ho mortality amongst the Fijians through measles was as great as anticipated. A mong those belonging to the Wesleyan Church 35,000 succumbed, and when the number of Roman Catholics and those not converted to the Christian faith in the group is estimated, the loss of human life will amount to 40,000. The census population of Levuka shows 760 whites and an equal number of lijians. The Auckland Steam Packet Company has contracted wiih the Fijian Government for the Star of the South to trade between the islands collecting produce. Everything in the new colony is dull, the settlers waiting for the satisfaction of claims against the former Government and settlement of the land question.
