CITY COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held this afternoon. Present— His Worship the Mayer and all the Councillors except Cr. Quick. Dr Gillies forwarded a long report on the subject of sewage, which was taken as read. The Finance Committee reported on the Princes street widening question, which had been delegated to them for settlement, as follows:—“ Your Committee has the honor to report having written to Messis Sievwright and Stout substantially accepting (subject to the satisfactory adjustment of minor details) their offer of a settlement with the Manse street tenants in respect of widening Princes street south abutting said reserve.” The report, it was decided, should stand over till next meeting. The main clause in the Public Works Committee’s report was the following, which was agreed _ to :—“That an [advertisement be inserted in the newspapers entirely prohibiting the practice of employing hoses in cleaning footpaths or _ allaying dust thereon, the practice beipg injurious to the asphalte, and that proceedings be taken against all persons infringing this order in future.

Cr Isaac, in moving his resolution re payment to Councillors on the same scale as that of members of the Harbor Board, expressed the hope that it would not be carried, and from the jocular manner in which ho spoke of the ‘ wealthy ” members of the Board who had voted themselves an honorarium, lei t but little doubt that his object in moving the resolution was to nave a flmg at tbat body. The motion was lost, Cr, Isaac himself voting against it. [Left sitting.]
