Lee, John MTJnton, Robert M’Kerxas, and Christopher Giles wore each fined 10s, in default thr< e clays’ imprisonment ; Anne Nixon 20s, or three days’; and for using prof me language 40s, or se /m days’ 'dies was discharged on a second charge of resist n r the pi die -. Vagrancy. —Catherine Driscoll, who appeared in Court with a young child in hr arms, was chaiged with drunkenness and with having no lawful means of suppo t. Both offences were proved. For beingdmnk she was sent to gaol for three davs ; and on t' e moie serious charge was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. the • niul iy of Mr J. T. Chapin. <m Sepfcinher 20 he borrowed a saddle from A-- os M‘K-gg, of Fast Taieri, and afterwards sold it to Mr Low. of Balclutha. He then absconded to Christchurch, whore he was afterwards arrested.—The Bench, in consideration of accused’s youth—he being only twenty years old —took a lenient view of the matter, and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment. A Self-appointed Detec ive Thomas Wm. Quelch Honeywell was charged by Defective Bain with having on October 13, he not being a police-officer, as umed the nnme and designation of a police detective,— Wm. "eDage, watchmaker, said that on Oc toiler 15 defendant cailed at his place of business and asked at'out a wadi, saying th.it he was a detective officer, and ha 1 to 1 ok aft-r such things. Witness replied, “They must be very hard up for detectives if they take the like of you” Wm. Morrison, tohicconi-t, deposed that defendant told him he was in the detective force now and got “ lls a day, and Bain has only 10s ” —Corroborative evidence having been given ihe charge was, on the application of counsel for ihe defence (Mr Mou.it) adjourned till next day.
