Friday, November 12, (Before T. A. Mansford, Es p, R.M.) Drunkenness and Attempted Suicide. - James M’Grinley was charged with being drunk on the railway pier last night, and with attempting to commit suicide.— Mr Fitz, chief officer of the ship Invercargill, stated that the accused was a seaman belonging \o that vessel. Last evening he (witness) was walking down the railway pier in company with the engineer of the s.s. Taupo, when the prisoner, who was very drunk, accosted him, and shortly after fell over the rail. Witness, with the assistance of the engineer, picked him up and requested him to go on board, when prisoner made a run and deliberately jumped overboard. Witness told his dog to jump overboard, which the animal did. and caught hold of prisoner, keeping him up until they got a boat and rescued him. —Seageant Neill gave corroborative ev-dence.—ln "defence, accused stated chat twelve years ago bo hurt his bead, and did not know what he was doing. Last night, when he had acted in the manor describ d, he thought hew.is on board the ship.— His Worship did not think the accused was in a fit state to be at large, and remanded him tor ona week. I yson.—Judgment summons for the amount of L 3 16s —His Wor S ip gave judgment for the amount to be paid in two instalments, the first in fourteen days aud the balance in twenty eight days, and in default of either payment fourteen days’ imprisonment.
