Christchurch, November 8. The weather is very unpromising for the agricultural show and the races. Five days last week were very wet, and rain is falling heavily now, with no signs of clearing up, A man unknown was found drowned in the River Avon yesterday. 'A nun called Francis Reginald Barnes, supposed to bo n son of the tho Mayor of Basted, was found dead in a water closet at the back of the Empire Hotel, on Saturday. Death resulted from apoplexy. The deceased, who used to drink heavily, had recently joined the Good Templars. Two draught brood mares belonging to Mr James Walls and William Halley, worth over L2OO each, died while foaling on Saturday. Westport, November (>, Mr 0 Conor, addressed his constituents here on Friday. There was a largp and orderly attendance. He expressed his intention to again stand for the Duller district. No damage is as yet reported from the channel, but the head race must have suffered severely.
