PRESENTATION TO MAJOR ATKINSON.
<m Monday night last Major '.. J. Atkin•t n, who until lately he!d "the position of -uimuanding officer of the < 'tago Volunteere, \v..h i-re-entcd with a purge of sover ij.-ns, as a maik of tbe esteem in which he is held by his I.inner fomrades. The movement originated with a few of the officers of the Otagoforcej some months ago, a,d the cause of the dtlay waß that the treasurer of the fund, Gapt. Jack, ha ito visit Sydney and Melbourne. The presentation was made by Maj >r Jones, as senior officer in the Bruce disfi-iot. In Acknowledging •he gift Major Atkinson expressed his regret ♦bat he had severed bis connection with the Volunteer Force of the Colony. He said that be had left the force, as under the present Byst*ru lie could not remain in it and still preserve his Rense of honor and independence as a man and a .gentleman. He would alwayß take a great interest in volunteering generally; and if trouble should ever come, and his eervioea were required, he would take care to keep himself sufficiently posted tip to bo able to take th* field in bis old pnsiti' n.
