THE VOLUNTEERS.

Vo'unteer matters appear to bo lookii g up, the various companies having lately recruited g»a<ly. and with the issue of Snyder rifles; an impetus has been given to 'shooting. ihe Art llery Company aie at present without small amis, having refused to take the carbine* propose:! to be issued to th; m; but they have applied for rifles so that th«y may compete on even terms with the other companies. • The scarcity of amunition is being much felt, only, fifty rounds per man permitted to be served out, and a good deal of "dodging " is resorted to for the purpose oi getting. sufficient for the varions matches. Seting that the Rifle Association Meeting is close at hand we think something should be done to get a supply for competitors. We are pleased to learn that this meeting promises to be a very successful one, a number of very handsome prizes having already bean presented by various firms in town, and they will shortly be displayed for ini spection. , . ; The beautiful challenge shield which was im-j ported from England having, in consequence of •ho debt upon it. been offered to the, Geueraj Government (for the North and South Island match instead of the paltry cup hitherto held iiy the highest scorer in that match) and declined has been returned to Dunediu, and a meeting of officers will shortly be held to arrange to pay off the debt and secure.iVso that this splendid trophy will shortly be shot f or in » representative match annually, and will no doubt be the subject of many a hard-fought contest,
