_ . Auckland, October 28. The Kaipara railway was opened to-day. Passengers were, conveyed free. The passengers per Hero presented Captain Logan with an address and a purse of sovereigns in recognition of his cool behaviour during the fearful gale oa the passage from Sydney. .. . , October 29. Mr Buckland reports that fat cattle fetch 35s to 37s per 1001b; shorn wethers, fatted, about Is per head lower than last quotations. A woman named Heath, an immigrant by the British Empire, tied a child to her back and jumped from the wharf into the harbor today, but they were resound. It is believed the cause of the conduct w«s unhappiness with the man she is living with nominally as her husband. Christchurch, October 28. Enderson, the celebrated Melbourne jockey, was sentenced to three months’ hard labor today, for stealing a gold watch and chain from the City Hotel at last autumn races. Wellington, October 29. M Donald, who was sentenced some eighteen months ago to three years’ imprisonment for obstructing the crossing of a bridge near Palmerston by shooting one of the horses of i oung’s stage coach, received the Governor’s pardon and was released this morning. H.M.b. kappho did not sail for Auckland as was but for Lyttelton, where she will wait the arrival of the Governor, who will leave here on the 6th prox.. in the Luna, and after the races, will probably return to Web lington in the Sappho. His Excellency’s movements after the races are not yet, however, determined.
(From our own Correspondent.) Lawrence, October 29, An accident happened here yesterday afternoon. Mr Roughan, of the Camp 11 otel, was riding a horse-race with a friend, when his horse fell, aud ( in rising, placed his fore-feet on the rider, breaking his leg in two places, and severely spraining or dislocating his right wrist, besides bruising him very badly. The chess match last night caused great attention. The players were located in a room belonging to the Telegraph Department, only themselves, the umpire, and the Press being admitted, which was a great advantage, as It prevented noise and inconvenience to the players. All the members of the club and their friends assembled in the club room where, by the nssisburee of messages from the office, they were kept posted up m the game. The Lawrence men were very sanguine after breaking through their adversaries’ first attack.. The second game was not concluded and the continuation of the match was adjourned to Thursday next. General indignation was expressed here last mght at the scurrilous attack made bv th« Glulha * Leader’ on the Lev. Mr Beaumont 1 here is not the slightest truth in it. '
