RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, PORT CHALMERS.
Friday, October 29, (Before T, A, Hansford, Esp, R.M.) Drunkenness.— Robert Keen, William Johnson, new arrivals by the ship Auckland, and James Allen, cook of the ship Zealaudia, after receiving a severe admonition, were discharged. Ship Desertion.— Richard Hunter and William Pollock, seamen off the ship Invercargill, were charged with deserting from their ship. After hearing the evidence, his Worship informed the prisoners that he would give them tho benefit of the doubt as far as desertion was concerned, but they had been absent without leave. If the case of desertion had been fully proved he would have sentenced them to twelve weeks’ imprisonment. For being absent without leave they would be each sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment, with hard labor.
