PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
, The usual fortnightly meeting of the above Council took place last evening, when there were present—dis Worship the Mayor, lira. Asher, MdKinlay, M‘Gregor, JKeid, Middleditch, Miller, and Dodson. The following correspondence was read A letter from Mr W. Pearce, contractor for the Waterworks. Alette from Mr Joyce, Corporation- solicitor, informing the Council that a personal inspection of the works was made 'on Monday morning bj r Mr Blair, engineer, the Ins(.ec or of Waterworks an ; himself being present. In consequence (hereupon he prepared a notice, a cop}’ of which was enclosed, and served the same upon the contractor at 2 p.m. same day. He also respectfully suggested that the Council should pass a motion to serve Mean Crw&aw wilftl'Keaae (nitfctke.ttn
closed notioer, intimating that the bond«me» would be - held responsible for the acts and defaults of Mr Pearce. The following w a copy of the notice to Mr Pearce :—" Re Waterworks Contract.—Kef erring to my letter to you informing you that as the work mi not being proceeded with in a proper manner, the Corporation would take the c ntract out of your hands, and seeing that no further progress has been made with the work, I have to inform you that I, in company with two officers of the Corporation, visited the work this morning during working hous and found that although there is work on which thirty men might be at once encaged, yet the work is quite deserted. lam informed that no work has been done for the past ten weeks, and an officer of the Corporation informs me that the works have oeen deserted for the last fourteen days, nothing whatever being done. I can find no reason for this fact, as there are plenty of nv n who would willingly work on the contract. I have now therefore to require you forthwith to put on at least twenty men to proceed with the work ; and I give you notice that unless you do so at once the Corporation will exercise tUe powers contained in condition Ne. 12 of the general conditions of the contract. — W. N. Blair, engineer."—Cr. DODSON moved that the suggestion of Mr Joyce be acted upon.—A letter from Mr Blair, District Engineer, acknowledging 'eceipt of letter of the 24th ult., calling his attention to the fact that the storm water was being allowed to run on the streets of the town from the reclaimed land, and in reply stating that he had made due inquiry #,nd found that as regaids the reclamed l<nd the waicr from the town was found flowing over it, and with regard to the road in question it bad been thoroughly formed, drained, pitched, and metalled by the Government in July last, and handed over to the Cori oration. The Keserves Committee recommended infer alia that tenders be called for leasing tho Recreation Ground from y-'ar to year tor grazing purpose; and tlut a deputation be appointed to wait upon the Provincial Government to ascertain the boundaries of the reserves. The above was the more important bußinesa transacted at a protracted meeting.
