Intercargill, September 15. A general holiday was observed to day, owing to the public opening of the railway to Gore. The weather was cold and disagreeable. Fifteen hundred people toek advantage of the free train, which started at 7 a.m., returning to Invercargill at 6 p.m. Tha train was drawn by three engines, and consisted of twenty-two carriages. There was no accident or mishap of any kind.

Wellington, September 15. A special cable message, dated London, August 28, says Sir Julius Vogel has arrived at Paris from Hamburg. The following tenders were received at the Public Works Office for the completion of thr unfinished work on the Clutha bridge contract Accepted : Mackay, L 17.668. Deelined : Wain and Co., 1,20,000 ; Proudfoot, L 20.078 : Blair L 20.613.

September 16. The inquiry into the collision between the Young Dick and Janet Spiers in Cook Straits concluded to-day, being the third day's hearing. It appeared that the night was fine and the liKhthouws distinctly observable when the collision occurred. It is supposed that the Young Diek had no lamps burning, and that the Janet Spiers did not keepl such a good look-out as ought to have been done. The certificate ot the mate of the Young Dick was suspended for three months, and the Young Dick ordered to bear all costa for damages, &c.
