CITY POLICE COURT.
(Before A. Mercer, Esq., and T. Birch, Esq., J.P.’s.)J Thursday, September 9.
Drunkenness. William Harris, Joseph Northfield, and William Williams were all fined ss, with the alternative of twenty-four hours’ imprisonment; Patrick J. Byrne, for being drunk while in charge of a horse, was fined 20s, or, in default, forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Ob&cene Language.—John Challoner, for using obscene language within the hearing of persons passing in Princes street, was fined 20s, with the option of three days’ imprisonment. Assault.—Charles Mercer was charged by Anne M‘Meikan, an aged woman, with assaulting her at Mornington on September 28. Mr Barton appeared for complainant, and Mr Denniston defended. There was a crosssummons, also for assault. —JComplainantj seventy-one years of age, deposed that, while feeding her fowls on the day in question, defendant came up to her, and, saying “he would do for her,” knocked her down as though she were a brute. She had been gathering eggs just before, and threw one at defendant. This was before he struck her.—By Mr Denniston : Defendant had struck her on a former occasion. —Defendant deposed that he had leased some land adjoining M'Meikan’s property on which to graze his cattle, and that whenever he went there complainant chased him off by hurling sticks and stones at his head. Mercer was bound over to keep the peace for six months.
