DUNEDIN CANARY AND POULTRY ASSOCIATION.

The third annual show of the Dunedin Canary and Poultry Association was opened at the Octagon Drill-shed yesterday. The room was well filled with exhibits. In poultry this year there was much more, and better poultry, shown than last year, but the exhibits of canaries were not so numerous. The hams, bacon, anti butter were also of much finer quality. In the centre of the room there was shown (forexhibitiononly)adishof fancy butter, in the form of a swan and other things. This was the work of Miss Doig, of West Taieri, and was much admired and highly commended. Mr W. Harper exhioited a pair of fine swans, and Mr Thomas George’s black-breasted game, bred by Mr Snow, of Mosgiel, attracted a good deal of attention. Four special prizes were awarded for the best exhibitions, under all classes, in poultry, (a handsome striking lever clock clock in walnut, presented by Mr K. H. Bailey), in canaries (a silver medal presented by Messrs Harrop and Neill); in dairy produce (a photographic album, presented by Messrs Clifford and Morris), and in pigeons (an electro-plated cup), presented by Messrs Hayman and Co. These gifts were determined by marks awarded to prizotakers under the several headings. Tu poultry, Mr W. Harper headed the list; in pigeons, Mr James Park; and in canaries, Mr James Curie. The prize for dairy produce has not been determined. The opening of the show was fixed for two o’clock, and at that hour there were about eighty persons present. In declaring the show opened, his Worship the Mayor said it afforded him the greatest pleasure to be present on the occasion. Last year his Honor the Superintendent in opening the show had stated that this brand i of domestic economy—poultry and dairy produce —had hitherto been very much neglected, but from what ho (tho Mayor) had seen during

the past few days, more especially’ at the Clutha. the people of Dunedin fully appreciated this important industry. He thought the exhibitions of that day might compare favorably with any other such exhibitions in the Colony of New Zealand, Special mention had been made of the pigeons (barbs) exhibited by’ Mr Park, and he learnt from the Secretary that they were so admirable to look at and so good that the judges thought they ought to be put into a glass case. Again, he found that Mr Curie, a gentleman who had taken a great interest in the Association, had taken the best prize in canaries; and Mr Harper, of Fleet street, tho best for poultry. He had no doubt that next year a large number of exhibits would be sent here from the Clutha ; and if tho show had taken place a week or two later, no doubt that little place called Balclutha township would have been very well represented. It was not a subject he need enlarge on very much; it was only necessary for him to declare this, the third show of the Dunedin Poultry and Canary Association, open for exhibition. Three cheers were then given for his Worship and the Mayoress. The following is the priz-:-list;—
