PRESENTATION TO THE LATE MAYOR.

A special meeting of the City Council was hold at the Comic 1 Chambers this afternoon to present an embossed resolution by the lats Council to their Mayor (Mr K. Hams ay.) Tire engrossing was done by Mr George, lithographer, on whom it reflects the highest credit. There were present the Mayor, Crs. Carroll, Gibson, Grant, Isaac, and Barron, and in presenting the testimonial, The Mayor (Mr Walter) said that they were there in obedience to the desire of the late Council, to present Mr Ramsay with an expression of their gratification at the impartial manner in which he had conducted the affairs of the office during the past twelvemonths; md it must also be the more gratifying to him (Mr Ramsay) that the members of the Council with such unanimity had expressed the most urqualified approbation of hisconduct; ah- , speak rag personally, he could say that he entirely approved of Mr Ramsay’s conduct. Ho had been very watchful in matters connected with the Council, and, in connection with their resources, had been mo-t careful in the expenditure of means at their disposal. He (Mr Walter) could not allow the opportunity to pass without expressing his gratification at the stand taken by Mr Ramsay at the Harbor Board in trying to get the Council represented in that body. Ho only regretted that his exertions had not been successful, and that lie did not receive the support to which he was entitled on that occasion. On behalf of the City and of the Council he regretted that Mr Ramsay was not a member of the Board, as the occupation he was engaged in made Jfi'n so well acquainted ;yith the duties of that body. However, the Exceutiye were the best judges, and he could not say one word against them. He hoped the presentation of the .Council might he a source of gratification not only to Mr Ramsay but to hia children’s children, who might by its aid know that their father had assisted in inaugurating works in a new country like this. The following is the resolution r To Keith bamsay, Esq., Mayor of Dunedin.

“Dear Hir, —We the Councillors of the City of Dunedin desire, on the £ye of your n th ement from the Mayoral chair, to thank you for the courtesy and impartiality always manifested

by you dufing your tenn of office. We desire to record our wish that at no distant period you may be found resuming an active part in the imHic affairs of too Corporation of the City.” Here foil, wed the ti'natures o r the Conn'.illnrs and Town Clerk and the common seal of the City.

Mr Ramsay said he had to thank the Mayor Hid members of the Council for their great •dndness in recoguidug his sm vices to the' City >y such a hand-omc testimonial, and he should mtertain a hind and grateful recollection of the went. Ho was sure ho had been succeeded by in able representative, and t bat his Worship would discharge his duties wich credit to himelf and satisfaction to the citizens. With regard to the Harbor Board lie regretted that he Provincial Council so altered the constitution of the Board as to prevent the City Council from being represented in it. As fails lie himself was concerned he also icgretted that he had not elected a nember of the Board. With regard to the expression that bo would again represent them, be must confess that for the last three or Aur weeks he had felt out of harness after the nud work of the previous year, and had rather ni-.rp time on his hands than lie had (xpocted. When an opportunity presented knoif, he would no doubt nsk the citizens to again put aim into the Connell, Ho again thanked them for their presentation.
