THE GAS QUESTION.
To the Editor. Sir,— While the gas question is exciting public attention, and a general outcry is raised that the citizens are being imposed upon by the defective quality of the gas supplied to the City lamps, can you or any of your readers infoim me whether the City Council has adopted any means to test the pressure and illuminating power of the gas ? Mr Hankey’s attorney asserts that it is 50 per cent, better than what was contracted for. and, in reply, we hrve only a contradiction, without any basis of argument. I have been told that Mr Hankey placed a photometer in the Octagon Market Reserve some years ago to enable the City Engineer to test and see that the public were fairly treated in their gas supply. Has that gentleman availed himself of this instrument and reported to the Council his observation ’—l am &c., ’
