The fine ship Earl of Zetland, for Diamond Island, was towed to sea this morning by the tug flkelong. The Union Company’s s.s. Taupe, with cargo and passengers, took her departure this afternoon from the railway pier. The ship Dunedin was hauled into the Graving Dock this morning for the purpose of being cleaned and her bottom recoated with anti-fouling composition.

The Union Company’s p.s. Samson took her departure this morning for her usual trip to Oamaru shortly after the arrival of the seven o’clock train from Dunedin.

-.The brigantine Helena, with a full cargo of timber from Kaipara, sailed up this morning with a light breeze. She left Kaipara on the 16th inst., bad light northerly winds to the Ksdkoras, when the wind shifted to the southward and increased to a heavy gale, which lasted for twenty-four hours. During the gale she was hove-to for ten hours ; passed Bank’s Peninsula on the 22nd, and thence had light variable winds to arrival.

The Union Company’s s.s. Maori arrived alongside the railway pier at ten this morning from her usual monthly trip to the West Coast via the Bluff, She left Port Chalmers at 11 a.m. on the 9th, called at Oamaru, Lyttelton, and Nelson, and arrived off Westport at 11 a.m. on the 15th. Left again, and arrived off Hokitika at 6 a.m. on the 18th, and was taken in tow by the steamer Lioness, but unfortunately took the ground on the North Spit, where she remained until the following tide, when she floated off. Discharged cargo, and proceeded on to Grcymouth, at which port she arrived at 12.30 p.m. on the 23rd, remaining there until 1 p.m.; called at Jackson’s and Big Bay on the 24th, and Preservation Inlet on the 25th; arrived at the Bluff on the 26th, and left again for Port Chalmers at 6 p.m. the same evening. We thank her purser for report and Southland exchanges. SHIPPING TELEGRAM. Auckland, July 27.— The brig Syren has gone ashore on Tairoa bar, hut it is expected she will get off next tide. She is insured for L 1,400 in the South British, foffice, which amount is partly reinsured in the Victoria. The vessel is reported to be much strained.
