Wellington, July 16. The return of gold exported from the Colony during the last quarter is as follows :—Auckland, 10,9660z5, ; Nelson, 3,655; VV'estport, 5,436 ; Greymouth (Nelson), 12,333; Greymouth (Westland), 3,545; Hokitika, 10,726; Dunedin, 29,603; Invercargill, 724, Total value, L 313.216, A telegram has been received from the captain of the Star of the South, who says he exchanged signals off the East Cape with H.M. Dido on the 6th inst., bound south. Both ships were laboring very heavily, and the captain of the Dido telegraphed, “ Can I render you any assistance?” The captain of the Star of the South replied, “ No,” and steamed away. The Dido has not since been heard of. July 17. H.M.S. Dido has arrived. She left Auckland on the 3rd inst., and intended calling at Taurauga, but was prevented by heavy weather. She encountered a succession of furious gales the whole way, and shortly after midnight on the 12th her forestay-sail was blown to ribbons. She also shipped heavy seas to windward, and took in large bodies of water to leeward. At one time over 150 tons of water was on deck. The same morning a Hugh sea struck her port bow, tearing away the hammock nettings, lockers, and a large portion of the bed of the sheet anchor—a solid block of wood two feet square—s<rawing the deck with bolts, &c., and breaking several large plates of glass in the main skylight. _ The 1 )ido wrs in great danger, and her captain says had she not been a good ship she would have foundered.

Hokitika, July 16. The Alhambra has arrived, but will not be tendered till to-morrow morning. July 17. The Alhambra has gone on without being tendered.
Timaru, July 16, The Magistrates at Temuka yesterday fined a respectable fanner L2O for shooting a hen pheasant on Sunday. A charge of shooting a cock pheasant, brought by the ranger, was dismissed for want of evidence. Two tramps, Saxton and Eyes, wore charged with obtaining goods by false pretences. Saxton was sentenced to three months’ hard labor. Eyes is a sou of an ex-Suporint'-ndent of Marlborough ; he was caut : .mited and discharged, complicity not being pro' ed.
