C'hki.-tchurch July 14. At a special meeting of the New Zealand Shipping Company thi3 afternoon, the followmgresoJutionswere adopted :—First : To empower the Directors to borrow money by the issue of debentures or otherwise, with or without securitySecond : To alter the date of holdiug the annual general meetings of the Company from the month of January to August in each year. The Chairman of the Bo.uxl of Directors said he was glad to inform the meeting that the debit ba'ance of L 1.400 (14,000 ?) which existed on the profit aad loss account at the last annual meeeting had entirely disappeared, and thecapitalof the Company wasriturnedin stock. Five ships had been ordered, and he thought they will be finished during the;current year. They would surpass the standard required by law for Lloyd's first-class certificate, and were being built on the most approved principle, 'i he Company has succeeded in procuring and obtaining offices at very low rental for London, at 83, Bishopsgate street. Since the last annual meeting the operations of the Company have been very successful -at the Bluff and Duncdin especially. The former contributed a good share of business to the Company's ships. The Directors, in view of the increasing business of the Company, had resolved to make a call 0f.30s on the capital—2os on October Ist, and 10s on November 14th, allowing oight per cent rebate on advance payment. Westport, July 15. A heavy gale has done much damage to the miners' flumes, and also to buildings at Charleston. Auckland, July 14, The last of the Forfarshire immigrants were removed from the barracks to-day for Waikato. They are a very superior class, and will have no difficulty in obtaining employment. Invercargill, July 15. A man named 6eorg« Smith attempted to break into Mr David Smyth's store laßt night, but fortunately MrSmyth was sleeping on i remises, and ran out, gave chase, and captured the burglar. He held him till the police arrived. The prisoner was brought up at the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning and sentenced to twelve mouths' imprisonment. It is supposed he is the same man who broke into tbo Magistrate' 3 Court a week ago and abstracted the contents of the hospital box.

Lv WHENCE, July 15. t Mr J. <"'. Browns ilinner, last night at Storry's Commercial Hotel, was a great success. About fifty people were present, and i\lr A. Ferguson, proprielxr of the ' Tuapeka Times,' was chairmar. Mr T. Gramly, the vice-chairman, presented the testimonial, consisting of 200 guineas in a purse, to Mr Brown. The usual toasts, inters] ersed with songs, followed, and a pleasant evening was parsed. Apologies were received from Messrs Donald Keid, H. Bastings, Fish junr., and J. P. Armstrong. The late fracas at the Town Hall is ciusing a considerable amount of discussion, and minora of cross actions ire in circulation. Mr Fraer, one of the combatants, addresses the electors to-night, in the Assembly Rooms; Mr Walker tomorrow. The weather is cold and threatening ?now.
