EDUCATION BOARD.
The adjourned monthly meeting of the Board was held this day ; present—Messrs D. Eeid (in the chair), J. Davie, Gillies, and Hislop (secretary). A deputation from the Oaversham School Oommittfe requested additional accommodation at the school. The application was referred to the Government.
A deputation from the Sawyer's Bay committee again urged the desirability of raising their school from a Bide to a main school, with a consequent increase of the teacher's salary. Granted,
A meraoiial was read from residents at Green Hills, Campbeltown, asking that a school be established nearer than that at Campbulltown. To await report by the Inspector of Schools, and a communication from the teacher at the Bluff.
The N. E. Valley Committee aßked that the Bchoolhouße be enlarged and a new teacher's residence be erected, as the latter is very old and decaying. Referred to the Executive. Certain Bettlerß at Forest Hill asked that a school be established there, the nearest at present beins nine miles distant. Referred to the Inspector te report on. The Oamaru Committee reported that as the new grammar school will Bhortly be opened, and the old building be vacated, the latter be used as a side school for the Boujh end of the town. Postponed. A sewing teacher was granted to Waikivi sohool.
North Oamaru school aßked for two pupilteachers, the appointment of whom were sanctioned ; and one was also granted to the grammar school.
Caversham desired an assistant teaoher in the case of the pupil-teacher's leaving. Agreed to. Kyeburn diggings school was raised from a subsidised to a side school. The salary of Mr Hariott, teaoher at Clarke's Flat, was raised from LGO to L 75 per annum. Blue Spur and Wetheritones were raised to main schools.
A. letter from Mr Nome, rector of the High School, with reference to prizes at that school, was referred to the High School Board of Advioe.
Sergt.-Major Stevens asked an allowance in consideration of his services in drilling the boys at the High School and all the Dunedin district schools. Referred to the Exeoutive. The Palmerston Committee asked that the resolution of the Provincial Council be carried out, constituting their sohool a grammar school. There was a similar application from the faien Committee, and it was decided that both be held over for the Inspector's report. TheOutram Library Committee submitted rules for approval, which were, with one excepiou, approved. Steps were ordered to be taken to appoint two assistants to Mr Hutton in teaching drawing—a male teacher at LIOO per annum, a female teacher at L 75. The Oamaru Committeo intimated that Mr Fitzgerald had resigned the head-mastei ship of the grammar school.
The Secretary intimated that it would soon be necessary to appoint a Sub-Inspector of schools, a practising master, and a matron for the Normal School. Mr Hislop added that he and Mr Petrie felt justified in stating that the respective situations cmld be filled fiom the ranks of the teachers at pesent iu Otago, so that deserved promotion would taVe place in some instances.—Mr Reid said he was pleased to heur this, as an idea had got abroad that we had to send Home for any necessary talent. The Invercargill Committee intimated that Mr Angus M'Gregor had been appointed head master to the local grammar school. Confirmed. A number of appointments of male and female teachers, previously sanctioned, were confirmed.
Applications from various committees, for auditions to school buildings and grants in aid, were referred to the Executive.
