CITY POLICE COURT.
Monday, July 12. (Before H. S, Fish, Esq., and J. S. Hickson, Esq., J.JEVe.)
Drunkenness.—Geerge Renwick was discharged with a caution ; David Ritchie, Jaineß Doyle, and Amelia Cross were all fined sb, witih the usual alternative: Michael Golding, not appearing, forfeited his bail (40s). Charges of drunkenness and habitual drunkenness against Henry Vezey were adjourned till Thursday, defendant now being in the Hospital. Neglected Child.—Robert Rodgers was charged with being a neglected child, being found wandering about at night.—Sergt. Anderson stated that the lad was sent to the Industrial School last year, but had Biuce been licensed out to his father. Witness found him wander, mg about the previous night.—The lad said that his father came home at night drunk, and locked him out.—Mr Fish: It appears a most singular thhg to me that a chill who has been sent to ;,the Industrial School, presumedly on account of tVe parents' neglect, should be licensed back to his parents. The thing Bhould be inquired into.—lnspector Mallard stated that frequently, on the representations and promises of the parents to take care of their children for the future, they were licensed out to them on application to the master of th« institution,—Mjt Fish: I think all repre*
nations of that kind should bs most narrowly Inquired into bsfore being acted upon.—ln answer to the Bench Sergeant Anderson said that the boy was Bent to the school in December last.—Mr .Fish : Then the Act has been evaded. It appears on the charge-sheet that Rodgers was sent to the Industrial School for four years ; and, although the Aot^ expressly provides that anyone sent to the institution cannot be licensed out till he 'has served one-half of the term for which he was committed, this boy could not hare been there a twelve-month. If he is an absconder, he is improperly before the Court on the present charge. If ir is the custom to license out boys to the parents through whose neglect they have been Bent to the school, it is a 'practice that Bhould be inquired into and be altered. It is a very bad praotice, and, to my mind, tends to a great extent to defeat the objects of the Act. The charge was adjourned till Thursday to enable the Bench to ascertain full information as to the conditions on which the lad was hired out. He would be committed td the Industrial ! School in the rreantimo.—D. Murdoch and Ellen Murdoeh were charged with being neglected children. It was stated by the police that their mother kept a houße in Stafford street, frequented by bad characters.—Mr Fish : It is a great pity that the nest of bad characters in that street cannot bo cleared ont. Recently on going home late from the Provincial Counoil I have witnessed scenes of a most disgraceful nature in this house.—The boy was sent to the Industrial School for one year and the girl for two years—that being as long as the law allowed.
Embezzlement.—John Guy was charged, on remand, with embezzling L2 8s 6d, the property of Ephraim IVJachin.—Prosecutor asked to withdraw the charge, stating that prisoner, before hiß arrest, wrote admitting the offence, The charge was accordingly withdrawn.—Adam S. Gordon, charged with unbezzliug L2 from Thomas M'William, at Wiuton, was remanded to Invercnrgill. Trespass.—vlargaret Le Rossignol, alias Jane Delmore, charged with being illegally on the premises of Robert Ronnie at Brighton, was discharged with a caution.
