Wellington, June 30. The suggestion of the 1 Grahamstown Advertiser,’ that Mr Stafford be asked to stand for the Thames, is very cordially received on all sides. The ‘ Advertiser ’ complains of the class of men sent from the goldfields, and claims four representatives when the readjustment takes place. The following is Mr Batkin’s letter, announcing that the Government had caved-in on the capitation dispute: “Sir, —In transmitting to the Provincial account this day the amount of capitation allowance for April, payable on the 30th May, I have the honor, by direction of the Hon, the Colonial Treasurer, to explain that this payment has been withheld until now in the hope that the Treasury might be enabled to adjust the charge against the Province in respect of the interest payable under the Immigration and Public Works Act on moneys expended on the construction of the completed portion of the Wellington and Masterton railway, Owing, however, to the ambiguity of the law as to the mode of making up these accounts, and to the difficulty of reconciling the views of the Commissioners of Audit and of the Treasury ou the several points involved, it has been determined to postpone the preparation of the accounts and recoveries to be made upon them until Parliament shall have expressed in a clearer form all instructions in the matter. The capitation allowance for May will be paid at the due date (to-morrow) as usual.” July 1. A capital luncheon was given on board the Hawea to day. About eighty gentlemen sat down, and the Superintendent was present. A great many more invitations had been issued. Auckland, June 30, The Harbor Board has received a cablegram stating that LIOO,OOO of the dock debentures were floated in London at 93. The City Council has confirmed the desir ability of tramways. It has resolved to invite applications for laying them till the 21st July, each applicant stating the conditions uncler which he would carry out the work, and de positing 1500 as a guarantee of the fulfilment. The Council will recommend the most favorable offer to the Superintendent for acceptance. Gbahamstown, June 30. The Customs revenue for the port of the Thames for June is L 1,123, and for the quarter ending the 30th June, 1875, L 3,0/3. For the corresponding quarter of 1874 it was L 2,650, Invercargill, Julyl. ■ The Mataura Paper Company are advertising for tenders for cutting a race and erecting masonry-work at the Mataura Falla, the plant for the paper-mill being manufactured in Sydney. A company has been formed here to secure a patent for a new description of rowlock invented by Captain Thomson, harbor-master at Htßluff. The chairman of the Railway and Immigration Committee has received a letter from Sir Julius Vogel, announcing that he had made arrangements for eight ships to sail direct to the Bluff—each vessel to bring 200 immigrants —during the next twelve months. {From our own Correspondents.) The criminal calendar is a light one, and comprises one charge of an unnatural offence, one of shooting with intent, two of horse-stealing, one of larceny, two of forcible entry, and two of burglary. The news of the payment to the Province of the capitation by the General Government was first conveyed to the Superintendent’s office through newspaper telegrams.
