We have no intention whatever to continue the controversy between Dr Bakewell and the ‘Daily Times,’ and only gave insertion to his letter because he had a clear right to be heard In reply to the attack upon him. If third parties are admitted to the contest there will be no end to it, and on these grounds we must decline to insert the letter of “Amicus.”

A cablegram dated London, June 15, has been overlooked by the Press Agency. It states that six tenders have been submitted for the Californian mail service, which have been referred for the consideration of the Colonial Governments interested. It is notified in to-day’s 4 Gazette ’ that Mr Stout has been appointed legal adviser to the Government, and acting Provincial Solicitor. As the Executive already numbers six members—the maximum allowed by the Executive Ordinance—the appointment is a non-Executive one.
The dog nuisance threatens to become as serious as the rabbit pest has been shown to be, Several accounts of sheep being worried to death have reached us, the latest this morning from Blueskiu, where a farmer (yesterday) found out of one of his flocks fifteen dead, and fifty so badly tom that it is doubtful if any of them will survive.

It appears from the American newspapers that the Philadelphia Centennial Committee have issued a printed slip, wherein it is urged upon the leading municipalities of the United Statqp—such as Boston, New York, Baltimore, Chicago, aud other cities -—to furnish for the exposition miniature historic models, in plaster, cork, or papier macM, of their corporate limits, streets, wharves, warehouses, public buildings, &c. “ These cities,” say the committee, “have it in their power to thus contribute a very striking illustration of their share in the almost marvellous growth of the country.” Melbourne is going to profit by the example: could not Dunedin do likewise ?
The following amusing story, supplied us by a valued correspondent whose testimony is undoubted, is an excellent illustration of the “cheek” of the Colonial youth;— “ Three boyp, whose ages in the aggregate do not exceed thirty, took it into their heads yesterday to rob a fowl-house of a quantity of fowls, which they sold, and with the proceeds supplied themselves with a good fit out of pipes tobacco; and in the early hours of the morning they were found comfortably stowed away in an empty furniture case, enjoying their pipes by the light of a lamp taken off some building material not far away. They were taken home to their parents by the constable who found them.” “ Prompter,” whose budget of theatrical and musical notes is unavoidably held over, informs us that Miss Flora Anstead has joined Mr Hoskins’s company at Wellington; and that from Melbourne he has letters which speak of the continued sucess of the English Opera Company there. Full houses have been the rule; and Mr Allen’s comic opera —“ Castle Grim,” which, it appears, has a London reputation, it having been preformed at the New Royalty Theatre for fifty nights in 1865—was most favorably received, as were also the two debutantes —Misses Liddle and Thomson—who appeared in it. Mr Allen’s company has been engaged for India, and will proceed there very shortly. The contemplated visit of the Prince of Wales is causing theatrical speculators and managers to turn their attention to India, and there is some probability of Mr Lewis engaging a dramatic company, and of the Carandinispaying a visit to the East during the next cool season.
Mr Bathgate found occasion to administer a very severe rebuke to a witness in the Resident Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, for not giving his evidence in a straight* forward manner. Three men had been summoned for b eaking into the house of Wm. Allen, dyer, and doing damage to the extent of L 10 0; and one of the defendants, John Rose, who was called by the plaintiff, professed ignorance and forgetfulness of everything that had occurred, though the affair happened only a short time back. When his examination had concluded, and he was about to leave the witness box, bis Worship, addressing him, said that the next time he came to court he must be better able to answer questions put to him. His Worship said that he did not believe a word that the witness had stated, and his evidence was not given in the manner which might be expected from a straightforward, honest witness. Rose persisted in saying that he bad told all that he knew, and at length his Worship, in an imperative tone, ordered him to stand down.
