OTAGO RAILWAYS.
To tiie Editor. Sib,—l may say at first that I am not employed on our railways, but I have hrid responsible situations on railways in the Old Country. Reading over the Estimates the other evening, I saw L4OO voted for overtime for the Southland railways. Being an old railway hand curiosity led me to look if the like sum was voted for the Port Chalmers and Clutha linen. To my surprise I failed to find .anything down for these lines. We all know that trains com mence running at 7 a m., and continue to do so until 8 p.m. - Some of the men must be on duty at least half an hour before and after this time* Curiosity also led me to inquire if they were paid overtime. I find that they are paid by the month, overtime and Sundays being given to the Government. Sir, why should the Southland men be paid and not the Otago men? —I am, &c,, T JOBTICB. Dunedin, June 17.
