THE LATE MR HAWTHORNE.

To the Editor. Sir,—Though I am by no means willing te admit with “Q.F.D.,” letter appear* in this morning’s ‘Times,’ that the remark* made during the last week with regard to the persecution to which the late Mr Hawthorne was subjected are baseless ; yet I must say that m one respect “Q.F.D.” is perfectly correct. The ‘Guardian’ did Overshoot the mark in saying that the * Times ’ was, from the first, a vehicle or attacks on ihe deceased ' iH.f Wi <o*l*. K 4i .

gentleman. It did not begin to be so till about two years ago. For I remember p ‘rfcctly well remarking to my wife, about the beginning of ’73, how strange it was that one of our ministers, who had lately come to Dunedin from an up-country township, should hold almost the very same views with regard to denominational education, the necessity for a higher class school in connection with our body, and the management of the High School, as were just then beginning to be enunciated in the ‘ Otago Daily Times.’—l am, &c., Anglicanus. Dmnedin, June 14. To the Editor. Sib, — I can fully endorse all that is said by your correspondent “Loelius.” I happen to know that as far back as March, 1874, Mr Hawthorne suffered from the early symptoms of the disease which ultimately proved fatal. Those symptoms he himself said were owing to anxiety caused by the proceedings taken against him, and the persistent attacks made upon him. It would not be possible to find a man more devoted to his work or more conscientious in the fulfilment of his duty.—l am, Ac., R. Dunedin, June 14.
