RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT, PORT CHALMERS.
Tuesday, June 8. (Before T. A. MansfoH, Esq., R.M.)
Assault. —George Stevens was charged with assaulting Mary Ann Adams on the 4th of June. From the evidence, it appeared plaintiff had gone to defendant’s house and requested payment of 7s 8d due for washing done. On refusing to leave when ordered to do so, defendant struck her with bis clenched fist on the shoulder. After hearing the evidence of several witnesses and defendant’s statement, his Worship ordered him to pay a fine of 20a, with costs, or in default to be imprisoned for seven days, with hard labor. CIVIL OASES. Stallard v. Cunningham.—Claim of L 5, the value of sundry articles of bedding and clothing.—After hearing the evidence, his Worship dismissed the case, ordering the defendant to restore a shovel, the property of complainant. Alphonso Johnson v. John Jackson.—Tiffs was an adjourned case, in which plaintiff claimed a pair of wheels, which he alleged defendant unlawfully retained.—His Worship gave judgment for defendant. John Jackson v. Alphonso Johnson, claim of L 4 16s for damage done to a stage and two spars, the property of plaintiff.
