Dbunkknness. —Thomas 8011, John Livingstone, Edward Helsbam, Thomson Dickson, and George Beetram were each fined ss, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment. Fbadd. —James M‘Donald was changed with obtaining from Mary M'Farlane, on May 25, the sum of L2 10s, with intent to oheat and defraud John Niven, book agent Accused had been a canvasser and collector in Niven’s employ, and the money mentioned was paid to him, but not accounted for.—Accused was father charged with obtainiug 10s from Francis Wilson, 10s from Julius M‘Carthy, and with obtaining 10s fid from Ellen Rooertson with intent to defraud, and to all the offences he pleaded guilty; stating in defence that it was simply a breach of trust, and that there was no intention to defraud. He hid received the money os collector, and had intended to repay it. Part of the money went to pay his expenses.—Prosecutor was here called, and, in answer to the Bench, said that he looked upon accused’s action as fraud, brought about by drink, and not as a debt. He had treated a deficiency as a matter of debt, and hushed it up on the money being paid over to him. It was not true that he had arranged to let the present cases fall through on accused’s getting security for the repayment of the several amounts. The Bench decided to take the most lenient view of the case possible, and sentenced accused to one week’s imprisonment on each charge. Obscene Language.— Henry BoxweU and Anne Reid, for using obscene language in 8t Andrew street, were each fined 20s, in default forty-eight hours’ imprisonment. Maintenance. —Robert Dickston was adjudged to pay 8s per week towards the support of his child, an inmate of the Industrial School.
