Oamaru, June 3. The I .licensing Court sat on Tuesday and Wednesday. The teetotallers, after a great struggle, presented a memorial bearing 280 signatures, which was rejected, on the grom: : that the signatures were insufficient; also ns objections to licenses because they -were not lodged early enough. There was a nice scene in Court between two of the lawyers. Mr Julius made most offensive personal comments on Mr O’Meagher’s mode of conducting caseon the first day, which evoked laughter from ‘he crowd in court, but not from the bench. He said that Mr O’Meagher should have a patent stopper lemon adp bottle down his throat, so that any virtuous indignation might be kept, down until some person knocked in the plug and let the gas out at the proper time. Mr O’Meagher replied in a severe but dignified speech, and said that Mr Julius had been personalty abusive without a shadow of reason, and that it was beneath the dignity of the Bar to address remarks ostensibly to the Bench, but which were really intended for editors and for the admiration of a mob outside the rails of the court. The remark about stoppers he treated as vulgar chaff; and Mr Julius looked round for and was more pleased with the ill-suppressed titters of a mob than the approving smilo of the Bench. He (Mr O’Meagher) warned Mr Julius that he might go too far, and said the reasons were obvious to the Court why he did not retort in a manner which would be unpleasant to Mr Julius Next day Mr Julius was _ about to allude to the retort, when the Chairman said it would be mere agreeable to the Bench to hear no reference to the former day’s proceedings. Mr O’Meagher said he had a reputation in that Court, and attack upon which he should always resent. He generally considered Mr Julius’s personal attack most intemperate and showing bad taste. Mr O’Meagher’s reply was dignified and gentlemanly. All the applications but one were granted.
To-day is observed as a close holiday, being the Presbyterian Fast-day.
