The amount of revenue received at the Customhouse on goods cleared for consumption thifl 4ay was L 762 0s Id. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. this morning sold the following racing stock: —The cb hj Merry Monarch, 51 guineas (H. Goodman) ; b m Kathleen, 51 guineas (G. Dodson) ; b hj Mistletoe. 5$ guineas (A. M'Dounld); Wee Lad, Miss Alfred, and the Ada gelding were also offered, but were passed ju. THE LABOR MARKET, Mr Hooper reports that the demand for good servants is very great, and wages are advancing, notwithstanding the thousands that have lately arrived in the Province. First-class general servants are hard to get at any price—L4o peryear being easily commanded. Ploughmen worthy of the name can readily obtain from L6O to L 65 a-year. Bootmakers aro also exceedingly scarce j and quarrymen are in great demand at 10s per day. Farm servants are obtaining from 20s to 25s per week; kitchenmen for hotels, 20s per week; cooks from 25s to 40s per week. Mr Skene reports that work has been very plentiful during the week, aud that there is every prospect of its continuing so for the winter. Farm, road, and rail aro open for all suitable men. Skilled trades in and out of doors aro still active. Masons and bricklayers, &c., are busy and not much hindered by frost as yet. Female servants are scarcer than ever. Wo cannot get too many modest, thrifty girls. Wages: Shepherds, L6O to L7O; couples from L 65 to L9O; ploughmen from L 52 to L7O; dairy hands 15s and 20s per week; painters, 10s and 11s per day; carpenters, masons, from 10s to 15s per day; house girls, L 26 to to LtO; hotel do, from L 36 to JLS2; cooks, waiters, barman, grooms, and such, from 20s to GOs per week; cabinet makers, ICs per day for country ; store hands and clerks, quite nominal; handy boys aud girls, Gs to 15s per week. THE SHARE MARKET. Mr Frederick H. Evans reports, for the week euding May 20, a better state of the market for the past week in two or three descriptions of stock only. National Insurance shares hang fire woefully, owing to the large numbers offering and the very few buyers willing to invest; 26s is about the highest got for them this week. South British are pretty steady at 48s fid. Standard Insurance shares are looking up, several parcels having been quitted at 12s and 12s 3d, at which latter price they are in demand; these stares have now on upward tendency, and the books close for balancing on the 30th June next. National Banks are offered at L3l7s 6d, but the price is a little too stiff for most buyers, although they are quoted at 30s premium on the London Stock Exchange. For New Zealand Bank shares the old figure of LlB is demanded. Colonial Bank shares ore in very general request at 275, few offering. Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company—sales have been made at 5s discount, but only a couple of transactions to record. There is nothing to notice in Forbury Park, ‘ Daily Times,’ or * Guardian ’ shores. Mining shares are dull pending confirmation of late reports. Z. Shipping Co., 295, [By Telegraph.] Napier, May 29.—Mr M. B. Miller sold yesterday 120 head of cattle. Store cows, with calves, fetched L 6 to L 7 ; heifers, L 4 2s 6d to Lslss; steers, twelve months and thirty months, L 4to L 7 15s; fat cows, middling class, L 7 10s to L 8 15s. These aro the highest prices for this class of stores, but it is expected higher will rule. The butchers talk of raising the price of meat Id per pound.
