BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.

Wellington, May 2?. Additions to the steam fleet hailing from this port are likely to be made shortly. A number of gentlemen have associated them selves to provide a sum sufficient to build a steamer of about the same tonnage as the Rangatira, and specially designed for the coastal trade. Mr Charles Seager, on behalf of the promoters, to-day proceeded by the Alhambra to Dunedin to try and arrange for having the vessel built there. It is reported that the General Government is not likely to accede to the proposal made by the Superintendent and agreed toby the Provincial Council, of repaying the advances made to the Province under the Advances to Provinces Act of last session, so as tn release the 180,000 acres of land which the General Government now hold as security, pending their selection of the four blocks of 20,000 each which it was agreed they should have for special settlement purposes.

(From our own Correspondents.) Auckland, May 22. j m m Cross, after leaving for Napier and Wellington, put back to land a seaman named John Young who had met with an accident. Y oung went aboard partly intoxicated, and commenced quarrelling with another seaman who was cutting tobacco, and ultimately made rush at him, when the knife accidentally entered the side of Young’s nose, inflicting a severe gash across his face. The man was landed in a much exhausted state from loss of Wood, aud was taken to the hospital.
