WRECK OF THE SCHILLER.
The earliest intelligence in Dunedin of the loss of this vessel was received shortly after noon by his Excellency the Governor, and the fact of her being the steamer that was carrying homeward the New Zealand mail via San Francisco, ex Mikado, gave rise to very uneasy feelings, because the last-men-tioned vessel’s passenger list included some well-known colonists and citizens •f Dunedin, among the number being the Hon. R. Campbell, Messrs Beaver and Solomon, &c! The anxiety thus occasioned has been greatly allayed, if not wholly set at rest, by the publication of -the cablegram dated the Hth instant, that “no Australian passengers can be traced” among the Schiller’s fist. If any doubt remains it should be dispelled by the circumstances that have now come to light. The Schiller belongs to the North German Transatlantic Company, and as her destination was probably Hamburg or some other port in Europe, the Mikado’s Australian and New Zealand passengers were not at all likely to take passage by her. Then there is this additional circumstance, ascertained by the Melbourne Press, that the mails were hurried across the American continent to catch the Schiller. The Mikado’s pas'sengers would journey across leisurely ; and as far as the Hon. R. Campbell is concerned, it is known that he intended to visit Canada before proceeding to London, The Schiller was built at Glasgow in 1873 by Napier and Sons, was of over 3,000 tons register, of length 380 ft, and one of the finest vessels of the Transatlantic line. From a telegram kindly placed at our disposal by the Hon. the Commissioner of Customs, we leam that she had on board 200 bags of mails, ex the Mikado. It is feared that the whole of the New Zealand letter-bags have been lost. New South Wales was fortunate enough to save hers.
