THE DUNEDIN CHORAL SOCIETY.

To the Editor. e J meeting of tbe Choral Society SL° n L- Sat^ day t venin ° the chairman pre“V* d h 3B, address by stating (I conclude on behalf of the Committee) “that, as the Society is a private one and as reports of its proceedDOt T®. “Seating to the outside public, it was advisable that representatives of the Press should not be admitted,” and gently hinted at the desirability of the only reporter present retiring, which that gentleman accordlng’7 did. No expression of opinion was taken on the subject, and the matter was passed, and the reporter gone, before dissentients (and there were many) could frame a motion proteating against such an exhibition of want of tact, bad taste, and exclusiveness, on the part of the committee. No doubt the committee are averse to such wholesome criticism as befell svT£ tana ’ bu . t th ®y cannot but be aware that the prosperity of the Society depends to a large extent upon tho notice taken ox it by the local journals. Judging from- the above, and the fact that pleasantly worded reports of the meeting appeared in the various papers, it seems the P. C. prefer writing reports of proceedings themselves. Whether the Press will accept such contributions regarding concerts (from which their representatives will probably be asked to retire) is somewhat doubtful: but of course the Society would rather concerts c / I . t . lcised . for such reports cannot interest outsiders, and it is pleasanter not to Anf % f • in *’ ™ Pppt that we “ were somewhat out of time in this chorus, or that “Mr Jones was rather overweighted,” &c Before the Ist of May, 1876, the question should be discussed, whether Rule 1 might not be amended so as to read, “A committee to be elected annually at the general meeting of the members. _As your correspondent on Friday said the Society can never become as large and prosperous as it should be so long as the committee hold office tnperpetuo. —l am, &c.
